Out on a limb: battered by the sea for centuries, Britain's Spurn Head continues to survive against all the odds

Article Abstract:

England's Spurn Head suffered heavily in Feb 1996 storms, perhaps revealing more about its own evolution and structure as well as signaling the need for new coastal management. A 1991 report by John Pethick of Cambridge University's Coastal Research Unit suggested a new theory for the famous spit, in which whalers' use of its shingle as ballast played a vital role. Now it and its mud flats are endangered, posing a risk to nearby communities and possibly to important elements of the North Sea affecting all Europe.

Plotting a path

Article Abstract:

Effective navigation on land requires the right equipment and the ability to use them. It also helps to have instinct. Good navigators are those who are calm, balanced, deliberate and meticulous. They make decisions based on information obtained from different sources, including those provided by aids and equipment such as maps, binoculars, a prismatic compass or a vehicle odometer. Caring properly for equipment is as important as having them and knowing how to use them.
