Pearl River powerhouse
Article Abstract:
China's Special Economic Zones (SEZ) are limited free trade regions within the communist state that have greatly boosted the nation's competitiveness. Guangdong province, which has three of the SEZs, has outpaced all other capitalist economies in Southeast Asia. Shenzhen has grown rapidly with trade and new businesses from neighboring Hong Kong, and has a per capita income five times the Chinese average. The relationship between Shenzhen and Hong Kong and its importance in the 1997 Chinese assimilation of Hong Kong are explored.

Polishing the pearl
Article Abstract:
Uganda is finally beginning to recover after twenty years of tyranny and civil war which began with the seizure of the government by Idi Amin in 1971. Currently ruled by Yoweri Museveni through the rurally oriented Resistance Communities, Uganda has experienced a 4% GDP growth annually since 1986. The coffee, tea and cotton industries are hampered by low prices and low intensity conflict in the north. The tourist industry is rebounding successfully because of the optimism and friendliness of the Ugandan people.

Business as usual?
Article Abstract:
The certainty of Hong Kong's political future, when the colony becomes a Special Administrative Region of China in July 1997, makes its economic future uncertain. The 1984 Joint Declaration between Britain and China officially assures the mainland's socialist policies will not interfere with Hong Kong's lucrative trade and high living standard, but China's harsh political and social policies in the past concern many Hong Kong business leaders.
