Measure for measure
Article Abstract:
The economic, social and environmental indicators and indexes now saturating the media are supposed to provide meaningful information about the quality of life in different locations, but any measure that purports to make sense of human behavior should be viewed skeptically. Indicators and rankings can be misused and misunderstood. Some, such as the gross domestic product, are too simplistic and outdated. Measures are becoming more complex because our understanding of the world has deepened. Economic, social and environmental indicators, for example, are now combined to measure quality of life more realistically.

Terminal gain?
Article Abstract:
There are arguments both for and against Terminal 5 at London, England's Heathrow Airport, and the final outcome is up in the air. Arguments for the new terminal include the need to improve on Heathrow's current ranking of only 21st of the world's major gateways in terms of comfort and convenience compared to the world's other major airports. A new terminal would also bring many new jobs to the area. Arguments against are environmental and social. Proponents fear that the competition will bypass Heathrow if it does not act to improve facilities.
