The pirate coast
Article Abstract:
Madagascar hopes that ecotourism will solve its serious economic and environmental problems. The country's eastern coast offers the visitor history and scenic beauty, but transportation services are minimal, tourist facilities are meager and devastating tropical cyclones are frequent. Madagascar's largest port of Toamasina began as a pirate enclave. It betrays more Asian influence than most of the country's towns. A trip down the nearby Pangalanes Canal is unforgettable. One of Madagascar's few remaining rainforests borders it. The island of Nosy Boraha, 40 km off the coast, is a tropical paradise.
