Pride of place
Article Abstract:
Public art has a symbiotic relationship with planners and landscape architects rather than a political one with communities. In the United Kingdom, it is increasingly used for landscape management There are concerns of insufficient grass roots power in the shaping of public art, and this is where artist and community relate in the most interesting way. Common Ground, a charity begun in 1983 as a bridge of the gap between artists, the public, and the environment, has started many projects expressing local distinctiveness. Public art still raises questions about its public nature.

Wild at heart
Article Abstract:
A proposed landscape restoration project in London's Hampstead Heath pits conservationists against proponents of an 18th century approach called the picturesque, in which nature is manipulated for esthetic effect. Those favoring the latter view want to combine visual qualities and productive value. Opponents insist a picturesque approach embodies a superficial, false view of nature and prefer to preserve the land as it is. The debate remains unresolved, though it raises important issues for the picturesque's role in nature conservation.

Alien empire
Article Abstract:
Ecological imperialism is exemplified by the introduction of non-indigenous plant and animal species to subdue vulnerable alien environments. However, efforts to stop this imperialism must be guided by informed moral principles and a recognition of natural order, rather than knee-jerk attempts to impose human preferences on ecosystems.
