Reforming European agriculture
Article Abstract:
The EU is modifying its Common Agricultural Policy in order to better respond to the challenges facing its 9 million farmers. The CAP, introduced in the 1960s, has stabilized markets and prices following reform efforts in 1979, 1984, and 1988. Current reformers call for better matching of production with demand, stronger environmental protection, support for farm income and the industry's growth, and increasing the EU's competitive base. Price cuts, withdrawal of production land, and increased quotas on certain commodities are among the methods proposed to reach these goals.

Article Abstract:
The European Union and the British government plan to build an English Channel tunnel rail connection from the tunnel's Folkestone entrance to London's St. Pancras station, a distance of 110 km. The route planned is the compromise forged by a year of fighting between interested parties, and remains controversial in some UK communities. Many support the plan because it will create 15,000 jobs and revitalize local economies. However, environmentalists want more of the mostly overland route to be tunneled underground.
