Article Abstract:
Jonathan Raban says he is not a travel writer, although most of his books involve descriptions of places and their inhabitants, and he has twice won the Thomas Cook Travel Book Award. He is especially interested in the relationships between landscapes and people and how they develop into uniquely characteristic societies. Raban's recent books concentrate on such US locations as the Mississippi River, Montana and Seattle, WA, the city to which Raban permanently relocated from London in 1990. He loves the nomadic nature of life in the US. His next book will be about Alaska's Inside Passage.

The human factor
Article Abstract:
Better environmental management in the Badia region of Jordan may enable growth while improving conservation. The Badia region is an area of dry plains that takes up most of Jordan. A government research and development program is analyzing the area's water and other natural resources. Increased flock size among Bedouin shepherds has depleted the area's water supply and jeopardized the Bedouin's livelihood. Scientists hope to increase the area's productivity without increasing the number of sheep.

Struggling with Shell
Article Abstract:
The vote to end the Shell Oil Co's position as patron of the Royal Geographical Society was overly hasty. Pragmatism dictates that sponsorship is a fact of life and the society cannot afford to chuck Shell when it does not have a replacement sponsor. Discussing environmental issues in front of Shell also would assure that environmentalists get their interests heard by the business community.
