Taking precautions

Article Abstract:

Travellers going on expeditions into remote areas may want to pack a medical survival kit. Expedition team members should be familiar with first aid and know how to prevent illness and injury. Iodine tablets render water safe for drinking, and electrolyte replacement solutions prevent dehydration caused by diarrhea. SPF 15 sunscreen prevents sunburn, and 100% DEET preparations ward off insect bites that can spread malaria and sleeping sickness. Hydrocortisone cream and aspirin can relieve pain.

On the record

Successful recording of fieldwork while on expedition depends upon the equipment used. While pen and paper notes are often helpful, a tape recorder is convenient for accurate note taking and interviews. Photos from a good camera will aid in future analysis and add more life to your data. Computers and global positioning system compasses are quick and efficient tools for recording and analyzing data. All recording tools should be stored and carried in durable protective cases .
