Saving Edison's lab
Article Abstract:
There is a movement to raise funds for the preservation of Thomas Edison's West Orange, NJ laboratory. Although the laboratory is part of the Edison National Historic Site, lack of federal funds for the facility maintenance has caused its deterioration. More than five million papers and 400,000 artefacts are threatened by poor security, poor plumbing, poor electrical and poor fire protection systems. A nationwide campaign headed by the Thomas Alva Edison Preservation Foundation is currently in effect to collect funds for repairs and maintenance of the site.

Producing more in less space
Article Abstract:
Industrial Coating Services (ICS) was able to change its traditional curing method with the installation of an electric infrared oven. ICS' new oven was installed for them by Indianapolis Power and Light Co. and the Electric Power Research Institute's Center for Materials Fabrication for use in handling a large contract between ICS and Navistar. The new oven cures 12 times faster, uses a quarter of the energy and uses 11% less floor space than the traditional oven. The cost for designing, installing and evaluating the custom designed oven is $350,000.

Saving grains
Article Abstract:
Reading, PA-based Empire Steel Castings, a metal foundry, installed an electric indirect radiant-heated sand reclamation facility to reduce energy and recycling costs. The unit was developed as the first of its kind in the country to take care of the necessary process of sand reclamation inasmuch as landfills have become scarce and expensive. It represents the foundry's efforts to comply with the Hazardous Substance Waste Act of 1994.
