Storm warning
Article Abstract:
Electric power systems and telecommunications networks have to deal with solar storms by the year 2001. Storms of various intensities occur at the surface of the sun at any time. However, they are more frequent and at their peak during the solar maximus. The next solar maximus is at 2001, an event which is being closely monitored by electric utilities. This phenomenon will have an impact on US electric power grid. Geomagnetically-induced currents cause a power failure in Hydro Quebec's system during the last solar maximum in 1989. Oak Ridge Laboratory predicts a three-day power failure in New England due to solar storms expected to cost businesses six billion dollars.
