The Randomization Technique as a Modeling Tool and Solution Procedure for Transient Markov Processes
Article Abstract:
Markov Processes are good models for many stochastic systems such as queueing, inventory, reliability, and maintenance systems. These are often restricted to steady-state behavior. Extensions to the randomization technique for computing transient quantities for Markov Processes are given. SERT is a modeling approach that is a general and efficient means of implementing the randomization approach. It computes transient state probabilities. It relates continuous time Markov Processes to discrete time Markov chains.

Now, listen carefully
Article Abstract:
Computer models and electronic sensors have tended to be ineffective in predicting volcanic activity, but this could change, according to University of Hawaii's Milton Garces. He argues that sound waves heard above ground can provide more information than sound waves below gound which are susceptible to distortion. Acoustic waves have been shown to be superior as predictors, he argues, though they cannot provide accurate predictions on their own, and need to be used with other data.

The visible hand
Article Abstract:
Hand transplant recipient Clint Hallam says that people who call him the world's greatest con man give him too much credit. He admits to owing expenses to his former agent but other accusations of fraud are false. He is still learning to teach his brain to operate his hand, one year after the operation.
