The mountains where time stands still
Article Abstract:
Arunachal Pradesh, a state formed in 1987 on India's northeast border, has changed little since the last British exploration 60 years ago. Though this region was thought to present natural barriers to invasion, China attempted to annex part of this territory in 1959, 1962 and 1972. When these excursions failed, China politically closed the passes to Tibet. Arunachal Pradesh has 2,000 kilometers of hard roads, though they must be traveled by jeep. Its 850,000 people are divided by many tribal and religious groups and still live in small villages.

Quiet before the storm
Article Abstract:
Tourism is changing the way of life in Spiti, a remote Buddhist community in northern India. Tourists began arriving in 1992, taking the artifacts of local culture, such as antique art and jewelry, and leaving toilet paper and other trash behind. The monks of Spiti act as middlemen for the villagers and visitors, since most of the local community spend their time tending farms. Large tour companies, independent of the local communities, gain the most from the current tourist boom.

Conquered!
Article Abstract:
An attempt to climb all three peaks of Mount Chongtar, India, was made in Aug 1994. Greg Mortimer assembled a team of three additional climbers and traveled from the Silk Road in Pakistan to the Karakoram plateau by camel. The team was able to reach two of Chongtar's three peaks, over 7,000 meters above sea level. Extreme cold and high winds prevented the team from reaching all three summits.
