The ozone story
Article Abstract:
Ozone is a toxic gas that is nonetheless vital to terrestrial life because of its UV absorbing ability, but only when distributed in the right quantities. Chlorofluorocarbons are suspected of being accumulated over the North and South poles, by the polar vortex wind system, and breaking down the ozone in the stratosphere creating the ozone hole. At the same time, industrial society is creating dangerous concentrations of ozone in the form of photochemical smog. Measures to alleviate these problems will take years to reverse these effects.

The sky is blue ... or orange, red, and yellow. What gives the sky such a wide repertoire?
Article Abstract:
The color of the sky is due to scattering of light by molecules or particles in the atmosphere. The shorter wavelengths of light, such as blue, are scattered more than longer ones, such as red. This accounts for the sky's blueness. The red, orange or purple skies seen at sunset and dawn are the result of increased scattering of short wavelengths, which dissipates the blue color, leaving behind longer, reddish wavelengths.
