An urbane solution
Article Abstract:
The lack of undeveloped land in Japan has led to new strategies in city planning that use creative means of gaining capital for development and encourage landowners, developers and planners to plan for the long run. Only 25% of Japan's land is available for human activity, and in central Tokyo a 90% annual increase in land prices is common. Developers have acquired capital by selling bonds on the international money market, then invest this capital in reclamation projects. The reclaimed land is then used to build self-sufficient city centers. The scale of such projects requires both long-term investment and far-sighted city planners. Projects in Yokohama, Tokyo and Kobe are discussed.

The pinch of salt solution
Article Abstract:
Iodizing the salt supply in Laos and other third-world countries is an inexpensive and simple solution to the serious health problem of Iodine Deficiency Disorder (IDD). A United Nation Children's Fund (UNICEF) survey found that Laos has one of the worst rates of IDD in the world. The deficiency, stemming from a lack of iodine in the diet, often results in goiter, an enlargement of the thyroid gland. In severe cases IDD can lead to mental retardation, stunted growth, paralysis, and death. A continued cycle of IDD can prevent a population from successful development and economic growth. UNICEF and the World Health Organization hope to eradicate IDD worldwide by the end of this century.

Breaking the ice
Article Abstract:
The expeditions of the ships Mers Magnetiques and the Astrolabe through the Northeast Passage could open the area to international traffic. The Mers Magnetiques expedition was a collaborative effort of France, Japan and the USSR in Aug 1991. The European ship, Astrolabe, set sail in Jul 1991. The Northwest Passage is the shortest distance between Japan and Europe. European ships have not used this passage since the 1920s. Some barriers to the evaluation of commercial viability exist.
