The heart of an empire
Article Abstract:
The medieval African city of Great Zimbabwe may be the origin of the Shona culture and intricate stonework. Great Zimbabwe, which existed from around 1200 to 1530 AD, is characterized by great stone walls and was sustained by cattle herding and trade. The city was located at an ideal spot for year-round cattle grazing. Overgrazing and overpopulation may have caused the city's downfall. Twentieth century archeology has proved that the city's stonework was Shona-inspired rather than the work of other cultures.
