In the line of fire
Article Abstract:
The tourist industry usually suffers greatly in countries torn by war or threatened by terrorism. Tourists have become prime terrorist targets in regions as diverse as Algeria, Sri Lanka, Kurdistan, Spain, Egypt and the Galapagos Islands. War-ravaged Bosnia-Herzegovina has recently drawn an unusual kind of tourism that considers the country's tragic situation a major attraction. Croatia is only now beginning to recover the beach resort business it lost during its civil war. Lebanon's tourists are returning, the adventurous as well as more traditional visitors who once again feel safe there.

At the crossroads
Article Abstract:
Blantyre was founded by Scottish missionaries in 1876 and later became a commercial center. It was a birthplace of African nationalism with the 1915 uprising led by John Chilembwe, but Malawi did not become an independent nation until 1964. During the dictatorship of Hastings Blanda, the city remained largely unchanged until Blanda began a redevelopment program that destroyed much of the old center. In 1992 protestors demanding democracy destroyed more of the city. It has resumed its journey into the future under the democracy established with the multi-party elections of 1994.

Take-it-easy tax heaven
Article Abstract:
Curacao thrives on its location off Venezuela's coast, where a booming tourist trade and an immense oil refinery anchor the Caribbean's strongest economy. Initially forbidding, it turned out to be ideally positioned as an international trade post, thanks to sheltered bays and a position outside the path of hurricanes. The city of Willemstad serves as the capital of the five-island Netherlands Antilles. Money laundering and other shadowy sorts of offshore finance also play a role in this Amsterdam of the tropics.
