The shrimp cocktail's hidden sting
Article Abstract:
The growth of the market for shrimp in the 1980's led to the expansion of shrimp fisheries in many parts of the world, including Ecuador where thousands of hectares of mangrove swamps were cleared for shrimp pools. Now, many of those areas are seeing their market shrink at the same time that environmental effects from mangrove swamp deforestation are becoming severe. The mangroves filter salt water, prevent erosion or flooding and provide habitat for hundreds of species now threatened or extinct. Laws and reforestation efforts are being implemented, but attitudes must change before these can succeed.

The course of navigation
Article Abstract:
The compass has evolved from a simple indicator of direction into a more sophisticated instrument. With the use of the Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver, travellers can determine their position in latitude and longitude to an accuracy of a few meters with just one push of a button. The GPS receiver picks up radio signals transmitted from satellites orbiting about 17,700 km. above the earth and uses the information to determine position. GPS COMPASS works even when the receiver is turned off or has run out of battery power.
