Mapping Europe's myths
Article Abstract:
Maps were used to perpetuate political and geographical myths throughout Europe's history. The first myth was that Europe was a separate continent rather than a peninsula of Asia. In modern times maps reflected Europe's ideological and cultural battles as occurred during the Cold War. A current myth is that the former Communist countries of Eastern Europe will easily convert to Western-style economic and political systems. The creation of new countries has made Europe's geographical extent uncertain once again.
