Triangular bonds
Article Abstract:
A growth triangle comprised of Singapore, Johor State, Malaysia, and the Riau islands of Indonesia has been proposed for the countries' mutual economic benefit. Johor and Indonesia would supply land, labor and perhaps water, and benefit from Singaporean capital, communication and transportation facilities and market access. An industrial park is already under construction on Batam Island, and labor will be redistributed from Indonesia's more crowded islands as part of the country's transmigration program. The three nations understand the growing importance of regional economic power and trading blocs.

Seas of conflict
Article Abstract:
The departure of the US military will leave the Asia-Pacific region without a security structure. Disputes over borders, islands and maritime rights abound that could escalate into military conflicts. The relative military strengths of the larger countries in the region and the economic power of Japan are feared by other nations. A security framework that includes democratic reform, economic integration based on open global trading and a regulated defense structure must somehow be formed without active US oversight.

In GATT's name
Article Abstract:
The General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) was established in 1948 to ensure equal treatment for both foreign and domestic firms and to provide equal treatment for all trading partners. The objectives of GATT have widened to include such areas as the environment, agriculture and health. However, the possibility of establishing a truly free trade system has been questioned. The structural barriers to free trade include differences in economic policies.
