Third quarter earnings jump 17.9 percent

The earnings per share of electric utilities rose to $0.79 during the 3rd qtr of 1992. The earnings increased by 17.9% over a 12-month period and has been attributed to a $1.4 billion drop in one-time costs. Total earnings rose from $44.7 billion in the 3rd qtr of 1991 to $45.1 billion in the third qtr of 1992 and represents a 0. 9% increase the 12-month period. Base rate increases and rate adjustments were the main reasons for the increased revenues. Operating costs rose from $34.3 billion to $35.1 billion or a 2.4% increase over the same 12-month period.

1991 fuel costs

Electric utilities spent an average of 169.6 cents per million Btu of fossil fuels in electric power production. It showed a 2.6% decrease from the 1990 average of 174.1 cents. The average cost on a cost-per-net-kilowatthour basis decreased by 2.8% from 1.80 cents to 1.75 cents. The average cost per ton of coal declined by 0.9% and on a per-million-Btu-consumed basis the cost rose to 151. 5 cents in 1990. Expenditures for oil declined by 11.3% from 1990 values as the average cost per barrel of oil was $18.50 in 1991.

Weather restrains 1992 sales
Article Abstract:
Electricity sales by US investor-owned electric utility companies rose only 0.2% to 4.7 million megawatt hours during 1992 due to milder than usual weather conditions. Sales to commercial customers increased 1.8% and sales to industrial customers increased 1.5%, reflecting the 2.1% growth in the US economy during 1992. The real price of electricity continued its ten-year decline since 1982.
