Up up and away
Article Abstract:
Several hot air balloonists will participate in the first non-stop, around the world hot air balloon race in the fall of 1995. In addition to experience and determination, this dangerous race will require extensive technological skills, meteorological knowledge, and navigational ability. Several types of balloons will be used in the race. Some participants will follow a slower route using older, tested technology, while others will try a faster route using modern and riskier technology. Regardless of the balloon and route style, the unpredictable and sometimes deadly weather may be the deciding factor in who wins the race.

Article Abstract:
The key to developing a sustainable mass tourism industry is to change the attitude of the tourist himself. Often, tourists are not concerned about how their holiday will affect the landscapes, culture and societies of the places they visit. Governments and environmental groups need to band together to promote 'green' or sustainable holidays through sustained action and education. Tourists must be urged to inquire about the environmental policies of tour operators and airlines, the waste management systems of their hotels as well as the benefits that the local economy stands to get from their visit.

Article Abstract:
Ecologically-minded tourists to a group of Russian islands in the Arctic may be a saving grace for the area. The Severnaya Zemlya islands in the Arctic Ocean are experiencing the effects of an Arctic warming trend which is changing the islands' ecosystem. A privatized environmental research station on one of the islands conducts ecotours of the area, which provide funding for continued research. The melting of sea ice may open up an interoceanic shipping channel.
