Neuropeptides and nociception: recent advances and therapeutic implications
Article Abstract:
A joint meeting of the European Neuropeptide Club and the Summer Neuropeptide Conference in Gent, Belgium, examined the role of neuropeptides in pain perception or nociception and developments in neuropeptide studies. The molecular anatomy and physiology of the vasoactive intestinal polypeptide 1 (VIP1) receptor was discussed. Researchers suggest a link between neuropeptides and nociception based on the bond discovered between VIP receptors and the glutamate within the central nervous system. Researchers are clarifying the pathological applications of the findings.

COPD: new developments and therapeutic opportunities
Article Abstract:
A meeting on 'Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD): New Developments and Therapeutic Opportunities' was held in London, UK, from Jun 14-16, 1999. In the meeting, it was revealed that not smoking is still the most effective way of avoiding the development of COPD and discontinuing the vice is the only way to stop the progression of the condition. Several promising classes of drugs that are being developed for the treatment of COPD were also discussed during the event.
