Breakthrough partnership
Article Abstract:
Genencor International Inc., Eastman Chemical Co., Electrosynthesis Company Inc., MicroGenomics Inc. and Argonne National Laboratory have joined together to develop new methods for manufacturing chemicals from renewable resources. The group is exploring a new production process for ascorbic acid that is based on a fermentation system and is less expensive and more eco-efficient than existing production-based processes. The process, research and development of which was supported by US Department of Commerce's Advanced Technology Program of the National Institute of Standards and Technology, involves the combination of several enzymic steps within one production organism to synthesize the target chemical using glucose as the main bulk raw material.

Percutaneous absorption of borates in human skin
Article Abstract:
A study on the absorbtion of borates through human skin, conducted using boric acid, borax, and disodium octaborate tetrahydrate, applied to the skin via in vivo percutaneous absorption showed that all three forms absorbed at the same level and possessed low human toxicity.
