ITALY: BAYER TO SET UP PLASMA PLANT
Article Abstract:
On an area of 160,000 square metres, Bayer is to set up a plasma plant in Rosia near Siena, Italy, within the next 7 years. Total investments will amount to L 300bn. Construction is to start in autumn 1998. Moreover, Bayer is to provide L 10-15bn to support the hemoderivate research programme of the university of Siena. Initially, the new plant is to produce intermediates to supply the Bayer plants in North Carolina, US. The annual processing capacity of the Rosia factory is to amount to 500,000 litres of fractionated plasma. It might be expanded to 700,000 litres later on. When operating at full capacity, the factory is to account for 10% of the European, 30% of the Italian and 25% of the plasma processing volume of Bayer group. In 1997, Bayer Italia generated a turnover of L 3,463bn, compared to L 3,309bn in 1996. Italy is the third largest sales market for Bayer.

Italy: New R&D unit for Nicox
Article Abstract:
Nicox has opened up a research and development laboratory in Bresso, Italy. With 20 staff led by Dr Ennio Ongoni, the unit will carry out research into the synthesis and evaluation of new chemical substances. The research aims at new treatments for cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, arthritis and Alzheimer's disease.

ITALY: INDENA TAKES MAJORITY STAKE IN BERNETT

Indena group acquired a majority stake in Bernett S.r.l., which produces vegetal extracts, from Res Pharma S.r.l. To increase the production capacity, Indena is to modernise and expand the Bernett plant in Palestro, Italy. Indena produces active substances from medicinal plants. In 1997, Indena's turnover rose by 19% to US$ 160mn, 50% of which was generated in the US. The net profit amounted to US$ 22mn.
