Australasia

Article Abstract:

Australian interest rates were reduced in May 1997 as inflationary pressures have subsided. Economic growth is slowing and unemployment is rising, so interest rates look set to drop once more, and this will tend to push down the currency's value. Meanwhile, New Zealand has been affected by high real rates of interest which have pushed up the value of the currency, which in turn has contributed to a drop in output and an increase in the current account deficit. Inflation is dropping and interest rates were reduced in Jun 1997. New Zealand's economy looks set to grow by 2% in 1997 with a further drop in interest rates likely in 2nd half 1997.

Na+ in cystic fibrosis: is it important?

Article Abstract:

Studies show increased NA+ absorption across airway epithelium in cystic fibrosis. Researchers are determining whether such an Na+ transport abnormality has a significant role in the manifestation of cystic fibrosis. The probability of effectively treating the condition may be increased once the relationship between Na+ and Cl-transport across airway epithelium is explained. Meanwhile, a genetic therapy and a pharmacological therapy based on the transport abnormality is already being developed.
