Ethical economics?

Article Abstract:

John J. Piderit, in his book 'The Ethical Foundation of Economics,' argues that an economic theory must have an ethical foundation for it to be a worthy reflection of economic behavior. He disputes the idea that economics is value neutral. The author identifies the seven fundamental human values of natural law tradition and explains that the major ethical advantage of neoclassical economics is that it promotes the effective use of resources. Piderit's comparison between natural law tradition and neoclassical economics in terms of the fundamental human values is discussed.

Making business ethics practical

Article Abstract:

Kantian deontology cannot adequately substitute rights and justice in business ethics, and hence lacks depth when compared with the ethical concern for caring that is adequately explained in the new Utility-Rights-Justice (URJ) model. The URG models deals more convincingly with the ethical dilemmas of the contemporary business person, though the moral duties have not been made more explicit in its objectives. Thus business ethics must focus on norms, and not on the theories derived from such norms.
