Imperialism, research ethics and global health
Article Abstract:
M Angell showed her concern over the ethical aspects of research on global health problems which usually benefit the researchers more than they do the research subjects. Her criticism was focused most especially on HIV transmission studies and the Declaration of Helsinki which required the best current treatment for subjects. Angell's concern over exploitation and how privileged people worldwide are being drawn into imperialistic processes will have profound benefits on global health if it is redirected to reshape political will and public opinion.

End-of-life decisions and the law
Article Abstract:
The Court of Session in Edinburgh's decision in the case of Janet Johnston has generated public debate on the issue of end-of-life decisions. The court authorized the withdrawal of nasogastric feeding from Mrs. Johnston who was in a persistent vegetative state (PVS). The UK courts are using a 'best interests' test to help them in end-of-life decisions, especially in cases involving patients in PVS and handicapped neonates.
