Aging, research and families
Article Abstract:
Caring for the elderly has vital ethical implications not only for medical professionals but for families and patients as well. Most ethical issues concerning the health care of elderly people center on treatment of people with impaired competence, treatment decisions for people who are near death, advance directives, consent for research, and striking a balance between the interests of patients and those of their caregivers. These issues and their implications must be thoroughly analyzed both for their clinical and theoretical import.

Advance directives
Article Abstract:
Advance directives, or patients' decision to refuse future treatment in case of incompetence, should be followed provided there is awareness of future situations and there is no competent change in the directives afterwards. An argument calling for the abolition of advance directives takes in consideration each persons' fickleness. The other argument contends that advance directives must be complied with because incompetent persons cannot possibly change their minds.

Ethics and law for medical students: the core curriculum
Article Abstract:
The UK General Medical Council's 1993 document 'Tomorrow's Doctors' stated that ethics and law be included in the core curriculum of medical schools. However, the document failed to specify the contents of these subjects. It is argued that medical schools should develop assessment methods to ensure that ethics and law courses are taken seriously and that students attain a certain standard of learning in these subjects.
