Yugoslav crisis renews debate on ending Bosnian arms embargo

Article Abstract:

The Clinton administration plans to lift the UN arms embargo against poorly protected muslim strongholds in Bosnia-Hercegovina that are being ravaged by Serbian military assaults, in order to dispel the impression that the US does not object to the attacks and aims to remain a mute witness. Military analysts advise against such action because it might be merely symbolic and cheapen the crisis that the Bosnian military faces.

Arms makers seek loan guarantees in new defense 'conversion' twist

Article Abstract:

Defense industry companies are supporting legislation to set aside $5 billion to guarantee low interest loans for prospective buyers of US weapons. Companies involved include Bath Iron Works, Lockheed, Raytheon Corporation and Textron. The program could provide employment for up to 200,000 defense workers and will help the industry to keep pace with US competitors, such as France and Britain.
