Eliseo Vivas, 1901-1993
Article Abstract:
The philosopher Eliseo Vivas never accepted the views of the current time and the reason for his limited popularity despite the originality of thought is probably that most people in the 20th century are suspicious of those who do not fit into the accepted mould. Vivas gave up engineering and studied philosophy from the University of Wisconsin. Although he followed Marxism and naturalism in the beginning he later adopted a form of Platoism and developed this concept in his book 'The Moral Life and The Ethical Life.' He also wrote criticism on philosophy. He emphasized the problem rather than its definition.

Vivas revisited
Article Abstract:
Eliseo Vivas believed that tragedy haunts human existence and he stressed axiological realism. These views were the basis for his conservatism. Vivas personally experienced tragedy in the Spanish Civil War. Suffering can make people more aware of evil and of value. Vivas saw values as real and found values in novels by authors such as Henry James. Axiological realism is not ethnocentric since it does not assume that we have better values than others. Vivas' work is still relevant as is his message, including the need to give up false hopes and be aware of values.
