Gilbert Murray: preserving the memory of the past
Article Abstract:
Gilbert Murray was born in Australia in 1866. He developed his love for the Greek language and culture during his schools days in England. He studied at Oxford University and took the Chair of Greek in Glasgow at the early age of 23. He worked hard within this establishment both teaching and writing with success. He resigned the chair in 1899 but returned to academic life in 1905 and later became the Regius Professor of Greek in Oxford. Murray is widely known for his translation of Euripides but he also worked hard for the public good, involved himself in the theatre, and expanded his liberal philosophy. He died in 1957.
