The Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and the Asian economic crisis are related in complex ways, to the economic transformation process known as 'globalisation'. The term globalisation has led to the development of private health markets that are highly unregulated.

The Olympic truce called on the cities to stop fighting during the games and allow safe passage to Olympia for the athletes. A network of major cities with experience of peacemaking activities would be established by the Olympic Committee.
