John Henry Patterson's contributions to industrial welfare
Article Abstract:
John Henry Patterson, the founder and first pres of National Cash Register, was also a pioneer in industrial welfare. He saw industrial welfare not as charity but as good business. A contented employee helps to increase productivity. Some of the benefits offered by his company around the turn of the the 20th century included hot meals, facilities for bathing and other amenities. Patterson's industrial welfare and a management style well ahead of its time influenced many of today's mangement policies and employee benefits.

Welfare as a moral problem
Article Abstract:
Welfare presents a moral problem, as it contributes to demoralization by promoting dependency. The working poor also become demoralized when they attempt to stay off welfare but find themselves less well off as a result. The Victorians were more astute in designing a policy of relief that would not foster dependency and would also promote the self-sufficiency of the working poor. Welfare reform should be directed toward reversing the trend toward demoralization, in part by reintroducing moral terms into the discussion.
