Philip Morris's failed experiment in Pittsburgh
Article Abstract:
The successful defense of the Smoking Control Ordinance in Pittsburgh, PA, demonstrates how antismoking advocates can use controversy to advance their cause. Pittsburgh passed the law to protect nonsmokers from secondhand smoke by limiting smoking in workplaces, restaurants and public places. However, the Philip Morris tobacco firm sought to weaken the law through a public relations campaign called the Philip Morris Accommodation Program. The ordinance's proponents managed to defeat the company's campaign through such tactics as letters to the press and radio and television debates.

Tobacco litigation, round three: it's the money and the principle
Article Abstract:
Peter D Jacobson and Kenneth E Warner find turning to the courts to do the job of controlling the tobacco industry and thereby limiting the unhealthful habit of smoking to be a pragmatic solution, when this solution threatens our democratic system of government. Americans should continue with their efforts to make democracy work, remembering that their legislators and regulators have the authority and lack just the courage to control the tobacco industry

Finding "truth" in managed care
Article Abstract:
A recipe for the refashioning of managed care in the image of the US securities industry to increase its appeal to consumers is given. This would require registration, just as the SEC does, private sector disclosure and auditing, and private sector analysis. Many of the patient protection proposals undermine at least one of these characteristics.
