Ready for a new republic in Italy?

Article Abstract:

Italy's political troubles and frequent inability to enforce its own laws have kept it from taking an appropriate leadership position in the European Union. However, it has changed significantly since 1992, and the coming election campaign and presidency of the EU offer a chance for further improvement. Widespread corruption and eroding faith in the govt persist, amid impending trials for two senior political figures, but a variety of national strengths counteract the worst such influences.
