Adolescents' perceptions of significant individuals in their lives

Article Abstract:

Two groups of Scottish adolescents were investigated for role model perception. The most significant family member and unrelated person in their lives, plus what characteristics these important people possess, were asked. The subjects were aged 11-12 years and 15-16 years. Results showed that most young people voted 'mother' and 'same-sex friend' as the most significant people in their lives and other family members except siblings had positive characteristics. Youth group leaders were also viewed positively among unrelated persons while teachers were viewed as challenging.

Young people and mentoring - towards a typology?

Article Abstract:

Young people experiencing important life events value mentoring relationships to guide them from adolescence to adulthood. A study of the perception of mentoring relationships in 150 adolescents proposes a typology of mentoring forms that provide insights into various adult-adolescent relationships. All the subjects experience effective long-term relationships, involving trust and negotiation. The mentor's ability to empathize is also important. Young men experience greater difficulty in identifying the importance of mentoring as compared to women.
