Article Abstract:

The analyses of pretend play made by Artin Goncu, Steve Kane, Hans Furth and Debra Gordon delve deeply into important issues commonly raised in studies of pretending. An examination of the communicative activity by which social pretending is accomplished demonstrates the need to conduct further investigations of children's conversations to obtain a better understanding of the process of make-believe. Such studies can help clarify children's usage of interactive skills, social cognition and practical language during play.

Article Abstract:

The analyses of children's pretend and social pretend play put forward by Artin Goncu, Steve Kane, Hans Furth and Debra Gordon in their works are welcome additions to the rich literature existing regarding the subject. While they devoted greater attention to the affective aspect of pretend, their investigations provide an enlightening integration of the emotional, communicative and cognitive components involved in children's construction of shared social reality.
