Factor analysis of the Marital Interaction Coding System (MICS)

Article Abstract:

An increase in the number of systems for breaking down microbehavioral codes into categories has caused perplexity in marital research. A total of 995 couples were videotaped while engaged in conflict negotiations. The archival set of these negotiations was coded with the Marital Interaction Coding System-IV (MICS). Factor analysis was used for empirically based guidance in establishing the coding categories. Four factors, namely, hostility, constructive problem discussion, humor and responsibility discussion were observed for both males and females. Approaches for category formation with MICS codes and coding system development are suggested.
