Neurotransmitter transporters (plus): a promising new gene family
Article Abstract:
Neurotransmitter transporters are sodium-dependent proteins that bind, translocate and release neurotransmitters, ions, drugs and toxins. Its cDNA sequence is similar to renal betain transporter cDNA while the translated protein has 12 hydrophobic regions homologous with adenylyl cyclase, sodium-dependent glucose transporter, and prokaryotic 'nutritional' transporter. More knowledge on the genes of the neurotransmitter transporters and development of its potential as cell-specific markers may be important in brain mapping, elucidating the mechanisms of neurological disorders such as Parkinson's disease and understanding the effects of various medications.

Elsevier's Encyclopedia of Neuroscience
Article Abstract:
The Encyclopedia of Neuroscience in a CD-ROM format is a welcome edition as it delivers most of what the editors promise. The format is smaller but it contains more information, searching is faster and the presentation is smarter. However, the electronic book is not as comprehensive as its name suggest. Despite this shortcoming, this electronic book will prove to be extremely useful for scientists and students alike.
