Posttraumatic stress disorder: psychology, biology, and the Manichaean warfare between false dichotomies

Article Abstract:

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental disorder which is theorized to be envrironmental or nonbiological in origin. There are studies, however, on victims of extremely stressful events which suggest that PTSD is biological in nature. PTSD as a term was devised in the 1970s and was included in the Diagnostical and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders only in the 1980s. A discussion on the historical background of the concept and research into PTSD is presented.

The validation of psychiatric diagnosis: new models and approaches

Article Abstract:

The psychiatric science of diagnosis and evaluation of psychiatric disorders began in 1970 in an article by Eli Robins and Samuel B. Gulze. Since then, numerous techniques and validation methods for diagnostics have been developed. Clinical validity is usually measured by clinical description, laboratory studies, and studies of familial aggregation. Newer validation techniques include molecular genetics, neurochemistry and cognitive neuroscience.
