Reported sexual abuse and eating psychopathology: a review of the evidence for a casual link

Article Abstract:

There is a close link between eating psychopathology and history of sexual abuse. The bulimic behavior helps to reduce or free oneself of the abusive experience. Several mediating factors such as dissociation, poor response to disclosure reactions, self-abuse and borderline personality disorders play an important role in determining the link between eating disorder and sexual abuse. The knowledge of complex links between sexual abuse and eating disorder can prove to be extremely useful in treating patients with history of sexual abuse.

Developmental role of perceived parental control in the eating psychopathology of Asian and Caucasian schoolgirls

Article Abstract:

A study of 406 twelve to sixteen-year-old Caucasian and Asian schoolgirls revealed the latter to be more prone to suffer eating disorders mainly as a consequence of their perceptions of parental control over their food habits. Excessive parental control over the eating habits of children is one among the various social pressures that can lead to eating disorders. Clinicians must thus incorporate this factor in their method of treatment of eating disorders in the young.

Female adolescents of alcohol misusers: disordered eating features

Article Abstract:

A study of 532 adolescent daughters of alcoholic parents in Minnesota revealed direct correlations between the occurrence of eating disorders in the subjects and the alcohol intake levels of their parents. Children of alcoholics, who were free of eating disorders, were found most likely to be weight-conscious and less concerned about parental abuse.
