Thinking about labour supply

Article Abstract:

Labor supply behavior is analyzed empirically using a standard neo-classical labor supply model. The model's ability to generate participation and hours behavior functions that are important for drawing behavioral inferences and simulations is demonstrated. A study was also conducted on single parents' hours behavior to show the nature of conclusions that can be produced from existing modelling methods. Specific issues and contexts on which the model's assumptions cannot apply sufficiently are also discussed.

Depressive thinking: shifts in construct accessibility or in schematic mental models?

Article Abstract:

A study of 41 depressed patients with another 40 people acting as a nondepressed control group shows that depressive thinking leads to an increase in interpreting negative attributes. These findings indicate that depressive thinking can be used to assess experience in high-level mental models. Changes linked with depressive thinking were assessed using the popular 17-item Hamilton Depressive Rating Scale.

Personal myths about work and mental illness: response to Lysaker and Bell

Article Abstract:

A study on the experiences of a schizophrenic is discussed. It is shown that the disturbances in volition, meaning and work inhibition experienced by the patient are due to the identity problems resulting from the illness. It is also argued that patients with volitional problems can be treated. Those who receive skilled guidance in obtaining employment gain material as well as psychological rewards.
