Conditions fair for Framemaker
Article Abstract:
Frame Technology Corp's $795 Framemaker 3.0 is an all-in-one page layout program that offers conditional text, support for desktop color separation (DCS) and other new features, but still seems overly complex and difficult to use. The best feature is the conditional text which allows users to create several versions of the same publication with one file, specifying which sections of text and graphics will change. The flexible table editor allows for the placement of tables in the body of a document, but does not allow tables to be placed inside other tables or in footnotes. Other new features include Fast Text, which allows for fast scrolling within documents; better graphics file support, including the ability to import 24-bit color TIFF, pcx, GIF, and EPSF; and FrameReader, which allows multiple users on a network to view and print a Framemaker document from a Macintosh. The menus can seem alien to the Macintosh interface, and the package draws criticism for its time-consuming importation of documents from other programs and for a few dead-end paths.

Nisus
Article Abstract:
Paragon Concepts Inc's $395 Nisus 3.06 word processing software includes good graphics capabilities for the effective page layout of basic newsletters. The software features multiple text and graphic layers, conversion of text files to a proprietary Nisus format, basic graphic tools, an extensive variety of word processing capabilities and the ability to import PICT files (other files are converted to PICT format). Major drawbacks are the fact that only PICT files can be imported, page views are only 100 percent or thumbnail size, there are no underlying grid and there is the need to import any graphic file through the Macintosh Scrapbook or Finder. Nisus is used to produce a sample document.
