File on the fast track
Article Abstract:
Many prepress and printing operations are moving to fibre-channel networks to speed up the transmission of large files. Fibre-channel is some five times faster than Fast Ethernet, which the industry standard for such tasks. The reason for this is that Fibre-channel was developed specifically to handle the transmission of large files and the standard includes the ability to automatically arbitrate available bandwidth, which reduces latency and provides improved distribution of bandwidth. However, it is also generally more than twice as expensive as an Ethernet LAN. Another advantage of fibre-channel is that, because it bypasses the workstation's input/output architecture it takes less time to access a file on a server than on the computer internal hard drive. The difficulty and expense of installing a complete fibre-channel network has lead many firms install a fibre-channel fast lane for its most volume-intensive network segments and, even then, a systems integrator is needed.

Recent results in art galleries
Article Abstract:
Art gallery theorems are concerned with the idea that two points in a polygon are called visible if the straight line segment between them lies entirely inside the polygon. The job of the art gallery problem for a polygon P is to find in P a minimum set of points G where every point of P is visible from some point of G. A polygon P is considered covered by a collection of subsets of P if the union of these subsets is exactly P; the collections of subsets is called a cover of P, which in turn is called a decomposition if the intersection of each pair of subsets in the cover has an area of zero. Art gallery problems are important because they are visibility problems, which is a central issue in many computing applications. Generalized guards; polygon covering; holes, arrangements and polygon exteriors; and hybrid visibility problems are discussed.

A Lid on Costs
Article Abstract:
According to Quill Corp.'s fourth semi-annual national survey, the cost of office products is expected to be four and one-half percent greater on an annual basis. The price of paper continues to reflect upward trends. Non-paper products show minimal increases. The cost of software has shown a substantial decrease.
