When two heads are better than one
Article Abstract:
Multiprocessing (MP) computers significantly speed electronic publishing tasks, but desktop users must realize the complexities involved. Applications and operating systems must be tailored to exploit MP power. Users cannot simply install an application on the MP computer and expect accelerated performance. Data-intensive tasks that generally slow computers such as multimedia creation, special-effects, image-editing, prepress applications and 3D-rendering, generally profit the most from the increased speed enabled by MP. Priced between $5000 and $15,000, Mac OS-based MP computers are available from DayStar Digital, Umax Computer and Apple. MP for Windows NT is addressed by IBM, Intergraph, Dell, Compaq and Digital. Intel hopes to use MP to deliver scalable performance enhancements in the interim between major chip generations.
