Opening the gates: Print on-demand publishing as cultural production

Article Abstract:

Long-standing problems of traditional publishing found an answer in the 1990s technology of print-on-demand (POD) that enabled the publishing of out-of -print books and also helped keep books in print for a longer period. A more recent trend is that of POD publishers, also known as subsidy publishers, who publish books at authors' expense but unlike the vanity presses of old are connected to legitimate book institutions.
