Photoshop 2.5: Photoshop pulls away from the competition by serving up more, more, more
Article Abstract:
Adobe Systems Inc's Photoshop 2.5 image processing software package is easier to use and includes the most extensive range of image processing capabilities available in Macintosh or Windows environments. Enhancements in the new version include more filters, more supported file formats, new darkroom-like dodge and burn tools, Quick Mask tool for producing transparency masks while viewing an image, support for device-independent CIELAB color space, Variations thumbnail preview facility, new Brushes palette that eases adjustment of tools and new Paths palette for combining all pen variables in one place. The new version for Windows is more cost-effective in that the hardware environment required to run it adequately is far less expensive than a comparable Macintosh. Adobe is also offering a $249 Photoshop Deluxe Edition CD-ROM as an alternative Macintosh upgrade that includes multimedia tips, technical library, stock photos and a few additional third-party plug-ins. Unfortunately, the CD-ROM is of questionable value. Photoshop 2.5 is rated five stars on a scale of five. Photoshop 2.5 lists for $895.

Font Navigator 3.0
Article Abstract:
Bitstream's $39.95 Font Navigator 3.0, rated at four and one-half stars out of five, has an excellent interface that simplifies font management by dividing the screen into four resizable quandrants. One, the Font Catalog, lists every font on the system; another, Font Groups, lists groups of fonts installed as batches; another, Installed Fonts, lists currently installed fonts; and another, Font Sample, lets users preview selected fonts. Users install fonts by simply click-and-dragging desired fonts from Font Catalog to Installed Fonts; other procedures are almost as simple. In addition, the Font Catalog allows users to view fonts by typeface style, vendor, character set, family, or font format, except for Windows printer fonts. However, Font Navigator would be a better browser if it had a view-by-location option to make scanning disks and folders less arduous.

Article Abstract:
The $79 FontMixer software package from Monotype Typography is a useful and easy-to-learn and -use tool for quickly creating composite sets of PostScript Type 1 fonts. Occasionally users need to access symbols, dingbats and other specialized fonts, requiring several trips to the Font window. A new set can be created out of characters from from other font sets, making some applications faster to execute and print. The new set can be given a standard PostScript name and identification number. FontMixer also provides keyboard remapping to facilitate the use of the new font set.
