Wrestling with multimedia: a video kiosk helps train athletes for Olympic gold

Article Abstract:

Graphix Zone Inc, a three-year old multimedia and graphics design company, has created a program to help the US Olympic wrestling team train and study wrestling techniques and past matches. The prototype of the custom-made program, known as the du Pont Domination System after John du Pont, the team manager, was created using MacroMind Director and its Lingo authoring language and Swivel 3D Professional. Laserdisks were used to store 35 hours of video from 350 wrestling matches. Blythe Software's Omnis 5 database, containing biodata of each of the wrestlers in the videos, their weight class, moves and countermoves, points scored and the date of the matches, was linked to Director. Users can select video segments for viewing by clicking the Video icon. The Domination system runs on a Macintosh IIfx with 20Mbytes of RAM and a 13-inch color monitor. It has been used since Apr 1992 at Foxcatcher Farms, a training site in Pennsylvania for the world's top wrestlers, including members of the US Olympic team.

Big, bigger, biggest: large-size color printing is making news, and the proof can be found at your local service bureau

Article Abstract:

The availability of new large-format color PostScript ink-jet printers and electrostatic plotters is enabling service bureaus to offer output sheet sizes to 8-by-150 feet at affordable prices. Previously, desktop publishers had to resort to expensive offset printing or photographic enlargements for short-runs of large-format posters, banners or billboards. Example service bureau prices for short runs of large-format PostScript output on the new printers range from $3.50 to $9.75 per square foot on paper and $13.75 per square foot on film. The new large format inkjet printers include Iris Graphics $120,000 Iris 3047 and $84,500 Iris 3024 high-resolution, continuous tone printers and the forthcoming Scitex Outboard, which will print tiled billboards up to 7.7-by-330 feet. There are several software packages that produce accurate large-scale graphics, including S.H. Pierce's Posterworks.

Mac takes starring role: American Film Institute focuses on the small screen

Article Abstract:

A new training and production center called the American Film Institute-Apple Computer Center for Film and Videomakers adds Apple Macintoshes to the tools of the film, video and graphics industries. The center officially opened in May 1991 and is a collaboration between Apple and the American Film Institute (AFI). Located in Hollywood, the center owns 13 Macs, several SuperMac Technology color monitors, and Wacom Inc tablets. Over 40 Mac software developers are donating products to the center as well. For high-tech training, students can participate in hands-on sessions that cover all Macintosh graphics technology and specifically the entertainment industry applications. Students range from computer novices to veteran users. Classes range in price between $20 and $1,000 and are taught by industry leaders in the multimedia field.
