Fending off disaster

Article Abstract:

The adverse implications of proposed reforms to federal tax policy relating to homeownership deductions for real estate industry are discussed. In this context, the steps that National Association of Realtors' Federal Taxation Committee is taking to enlighten the cabinet ministers are also discussed.

New Markets initiative means new business

The New Markets Tax Credit, a program enacted by the National Association of Realtors at the end of 2000, will most likely result in an increase in commercial property development. This will mean more business for commercial real estate professionals, in both sales and management.

Downward mobility: thanks to the 1997 tax law changes, more seniors are happily buying far less home than they sold

Article Abstract:

The implementation of the Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997 has increased the power of seniors in engaging in trade-down home sales transactions. The law does not require sellers to defer their capital gains tax liability and roll their profit into a house with the same or higher value.
