Latin America's free zones: anatomy of a growth spiral

Article Abstract:

Latin America's free trade zone, export processing zone or bonded facility has allowed companies in labor-intensive industries to cost-effectively contract their production to offshore locations. Originally meant to benefit US companies seeking to reduce labor costs, the zone is now creating the first true Latin American middle class and free market economies backed by government and business alliances. Trade zones stand a good chance of now generating vast new markets for US-made products.

Free-trade winds help warm up global investment climate

Article Abstract:

The significant changes occurring in the global investment market are most apparent with the advent of the North American Free Trade Agreement and the European Economic Area. The 'open market' syndrome has spread even to developing countries whose accelerated investment progress may have been accelerated by more skilled workforces and liberalized foreign investment regulations. Effective facility managers should take advantage of the present highly-conducive global investment environment.
